What are occupations?

Our ‘occupations’ are fundamental to who we are as human beings. They provide our lives with meaning and purpose, and provide us with a sense of self, identity and well-being. They are intertwined with things we value and apart from some activities that you can safely say we all do (e.g. toileting and eating), what occupations we do, and the nature of how we perform them can be quite diverse, depending on our unique lives and individuality.

To get you thinking about it and how unlimited it really is, think about what you are doing now. As you are reading this - you are engaging in an occupation. The seat you are sitting on, the bed you are lying on, the floor you are standing on, the space around you, the device you are using, are all examples of key players in supporting you to perform the occupation.

Any barriers to doing this or other occupations, is where an Occupational Therapist is professionally trained through researched backed methods, processes and approaches, to help identify and problem solve how to overcome those barriers.
